Education After Loss: How Umer Rehman Found Hope Through READ Foundation
Growing Up in Kotera Sahlian
Umer Rehman is a 16-year-old student at READ Foundation School in Kotera Sahlian. He enjoys playing cricket, and his favourite subject is English. Like many children in his community, Umer’s childhood was shaped by hardship and responsibility from an early age.
Losing His Father and Facing Hardship
Umer’s father passed away from cancer when he was still very young. His death left the family without income and emotional support. Umer’s mother became the only caregiver for her two sons. Without savings or a steady income, she struggled to put food on the table, cover household expenses, and keep her children in school.
Umer’s older brother was still too young to fully support the family, but he did what he could to help. Their mother often skipped meals so that her sons could eat. For a time, Umer’s education seemed uncertain.

Support From the READ Foundation
When Umer’s family learned about READ Foundation, everything began to change. Through the Orphan Sponsorship Programme, Umer received full support for his education. His school fees, uniform, shoes, books, and stationery were all provided.
This assistance allowed Umer to remain in school and focus on learning. It also reduced the pressure on his mother, who could now use the family’s limited income to meet other basic needs. In addition, READ Foundation also provided her with a monthly stipend to further support her and her family.

Returning to School and Rebuilding Confidence
With consistent support from the programme, Umer regained his confidence. Returning to class gave him structure and purpose at a time when his family was struggling to stay hopeful. His teachers noticed his determination and encouraged him to keep working hard.
Umer’s mother also saw a change in him. After losing his father, he had become quiet and withdrawn, but school brought back his smile and energy. The relief of knowing her son could continue his education gave her peace of mind.
Umer’s Dream of Becoming a Teacher
Umer now dreams of becoming a teacher. For him, this goal is not just about a career but about helping his community. He wants to guide and support children who face the same challenges he once did.
He hopes to inspire parents to value education, especially for girls and children from poor families. Umer believes that teachers can do more than teach lessons; they can help students believe in themselves and work toward a better future.
How the Project Is Helping Him Reach His Goal
READ Foundation’s support has given Umer stability and confidence. He no longer worries about school expenses or the possibility of dropping out. Instead, he focuses on studying and preparing to reach his goal of teaching.
Without this support, Umer might have left school to find work and help his mother. Now, he believes he can finish his education and contribute positively to his community.
The Impact on His Family
Umer’s mother describes READ Foundation’s help as a turning point for their family. After her husband’s death, life felt uncertain, but the sponsorship provided a steady source of relief. It allowed her to prioritise essentials like food and bills without worrying about her son’s school expenses.
This support also strengthened the family emotionally. Umer’s older brother, who serves in the army, feels reassured knowing his younger brother’s education is secure. The family has regained a sense of dignity and hope for the future.
The Role of Teachers and Mentors
Teachers at READ Foundation School describe Umer as disciplined, responsible, and compassionate. He listens carefully, helps his classmates, and approaches his studies with seriousness. His teachers believe that his empathy and sense of duty will make him an excellent teacher one day.
They also emphasise that the programme gives students like Umer not only education but a renewed sense of hope. Seeing children rebuild confidence after hardship motivates the staff to continue their work with dedication.
Building a Brighter Future
Today, Umer continues his studies in Grade 10 with focus and optimism. The challenges remain, but he no longer faces them alone. Through the Orphan Sponsorship Programme, he has access to the tools, guidance, and encouragement needed to move forward.
Umer’s story shows how access to education and consistent support can change the direction of a young life. With help from donors and educators, children like him can stay in school, build confidence, and give back to their communities.
